Discover A Hidden Gem—Haiku Sugar Mill

Do you like to discover hidden local places more than the obvious tourist attractions? If so, visit the Haiku Sugar Mill in Maui, Hawaii.

It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Hawaii.

History, Tropical Plants, and Antiques

Connect with the culture and early history of the sugar industry on Maui with an enjoyable and relaxing tour of the Haiku Sugar Mill. You can view the vine covered ruins of the mill that operated in the mid-1800’s. You will also see the remains of a steam engine that was used for grinding the sugar cane of the first crop of the mill in 1861. The steam engine was leading edge technology of the time.

Your  guide will tell you some of the history of Alexander and Baldwin, the men who were instrumental in establishing the mill and constructing the 17 mile Hamakua Ditch, which brought water from East Maui to Central Maui. When water was available in the flatter lands of Maui, the Haiku Mill shut down in 1879.

Interspersed among the ruins are French antiques. A chandelier that hangs from a huge mango tree is one of the most interesting and unique pieces.

The lush tropical plants all through the grounds are beautiful, and the guide is knowledgeable about them.

Romance

The history, the plants, and the antiques all appeal to the romantic senses, and it is entertaining to hear of the many weddings and receptions that are held in the Mill. There had been a celebrity wedding there the weekend previous to our visit. Yes, one of the Bachelorettes became a Mrs. there. The dressing room for the bride is in a restored plantation house.
